Expert comment: Rising NBN prices

Mariam Gabaji

Finder telco expert, Mariam Gabaji, comments

Since October 2023 we've seen major providers such as Optus, Telstra and Aussie Broadband raise prices on NBN 50 plans, the most popular speed tier used by the majority of Australians. On the flipside, some have reduced the cost of NBN 100 which is the second most popular speed tier.

Other providers are expected to follow suit in light of NBN's new pricing framework, which kicks in on 1 December 2023.

If you haven't compared NBN plans in 6-12 months you could be missing out on some big savings. For example, the price difference between the cheapest and most expensive NBN 50 plan on Finder is over $450.

If you've also been eyeballing faster internet speeds, now might be the time to upgrade your NBN plan to take advantage of slightly lower pricing. But don't let providers convince you to sign up to faster speeds if you don't need them.

How do you find the best NBN plan?

Everyone's needs are different so consider the following when looking for the best NBN plan for your household:

Speed icon
What NBN speed are you after?
The size of your household and what you're doing on the internet will determine which speed is appropriate for you. While most Australians are on an NBN 50 plan, an NBN 100 plan could be better for you if the majority of your household works from home. In fact, Finder's Consumer Sentiment Tracker found that more Australians are satisfied with an NBN 100 plan compared to any other NBN speed tier.
Features icon
Are you after a basic NBN plan or one with extra features?
Having extra perks tacked onto your plan can be nice, but consider whether you'll actually make use of these or if you're happy with just a simple plug and play NBN plan.
Modem icon
Do you need to buy a new modem?
If you already own a modem and are comfortable transferring it across to a new provider, it's a great way to keep your initial costs low. Otherwise, all providers offer a modem to purchase with your NBN plan. Just make sure you factor this cost in when you're signing up to your new plan.

Here are some handy tips from our experts for picking the best NBN plan:

Alanna Glenn

When I moved into my current apartment I just paid half the internet bills my roommate had signed up for ages ago when she moved in. Turns out she hadn't compared in a while and we were overpaying for pretty average speed. A quick comparison took us from 90 Mbps to over 200 Mbps for $5 less per month.

How we researched the best NBN plans

  • We looked at residential NBN plans in our database and opted for fixed-line technologies as they're widely available across each state.
  • Other selection criteria to narrow down our shortlist included looking at NBN plans that offer unlimited data and are an active partner on Finder.
  • Promotional discounts are only applicable if they are valid for at least 2 weeks from the time of scoring.

Best NBN categories

Each month, we select the best NBN plans across 6 categories.

  1. Most popular NBN plan: Based on the plan most users have clicked on in the last 30 days.
  2. Under $60 (cheap NBN plan): Based on our internal value scoring system.
  3. Best NBN plan for everyday use (NBN 50): Based on our internal value scoring system, limiting results to plans on the NBN 50 speed tier, which is proven to be the most popular speed category in Australia.
  4. Best NBN plan for fast speeds (NBN 100): Based on our internal value scoring, limiting results to plans on the NBN 100 speed tier which are suitable for larger households of 3-4 people.
  5. Best NBN plan for Superfast speeds (NBN 250): Based on our internal value scoring, limiting results to plans on the NBN 250 speed tier.
  6. Best NBN plan with $0 modem: Based on plans which include a modem at time of purchase and the shortest timeframe needed to get the modem for $0, limiting results to NBN 50 plans based on the most popular speed in Australian households.
