Our panel of broadband experts compared 135 NBN plans from 43 providers to select the best value NBN provider over 3 categories.
Each plan was given a value score based on factors such as price, typical download speed, speed reliability and live chat support, with the provider having the highest score coming out as the winner.
2 award categories were based on the most popular speed tiers in Australia (NBN 50 and NBN 100), and the final category was based on plans costing under $60 per month.
Since October 2023 we've seen major providers such as Optus, Telstra and Aussie Broadband raise prices on NBN 50 plans, the most popular speed tier used by the majority of Australians. On the flipside, some have reduced the cost of NBN 100 which is the second most popular speed tier.
Other providers are expected to follow suit in light of NBN's new pricing framework, which kicks in on 1 December 2023.
If you haven't compared NBN plans in 6-12 months you could be missing out on some big savings. For example, the price difference between the cheapest and most expensive NBN 50 plan on Finder is over $450.
If you've also been eyeballing faster internet speeds, now might be the time to upgrade your NBN plan to take advantage of slightly lower pricing. But don't let providers convince you to sign up to faster speeds if you don't need them.

What NBN speed are you after? The size of your household and what you're doing on the internet will determine which speed is appropriate for you. While most Australians are on an NBN 50 plan, an NBN 100 plan could be better for you if the majority of your household works from home. In fact, Finder's Consumer Sentiment Tracker found that more Australians are satisfied with an NBN 100 plan compared to any other NBN speed tier.
Are you after a basic NBN plan or one with extra features? Having extra perks tacked onto your plan can be nice, but consider whether you'll actually make use of these or if you're happy with just a simple plug and play NBN plan.
Do you need to buy a new modem? If you already own a modem and are comfortable transferring it across to a new provider, it's a great way to keep your initial costs low. Otherwise, all providers offer a modem to purchase with your NBN plan. Just make sure you factor this cost in when you're signing up to your new plan.

If you're moving house and signing up to a new NBN provider and need a modem delivered at your new address, don't want until the last minute to sort it out. There's a good chance you'll be without internet at your new place if they can't expedite the delivery.
The best NBN plan is different for everybody. Consider things like how many people are in your household and what exactly everyone does online. With this knowledge, you'll find yourself with a good starting point to finding the best plan that works for you.
Before signing up to your new NBN plan, give your current provider a call or message to ask about setting up a cancellation date. In some cases, your provider could offer to price-match or bring the cost of your current plan down for a couple of months.
When I moved into my current apartment I just paid half the internet bills my roommate had signed up for ages ago when she moved in. Turns out she hadn't compared in a while and we were overpaying for pretty average speed. A quick comparison took us from 90 Mbps to over 200 Mbps for $5 less per month.

How does Finder's value scoring system work?
For certain categories, we use a value scoring system to choose the best NBN plan by scoring the following factors:
Cost per Mbps. This is calculated by taking the price of the plan over 24 months divided by the download speeds you get (Mbps). The price includes any promotional offers that are valid for 2 or more weeks from when we selected the plan.
Option to BYO modem. Plans with the choice to BYO modem are weighted more favourably than those without the option.
Cost of modem.
Live chat support. We weight providers with an active live chat service higher than those that don't have this feature. This must be a personalised service - live chats with automated prompts or responses are not included.
Availability of phone support. Providers with an active call centre are weighted higher than those without. Location of the call centre is not taken into account.
The provider's ranking in the ACCC's broadband performance report (if applicable). These rankings are updated quarterly and are a representation of the reliability of the NBN provider and the speeds they advertise across their plans.
We then assign a weight to each of the factors in order to calculate a value score. Price and speed are given the highest weighting.
