Does pet insurance cover dental?

Yes, here's how pet insurance covers dental:

Simple Extraction

Dental illness cover

This can help pay for dental illnesses your dog or cat has such as gingivitis, abscesses and tooth removal. It's often only available as an add-on. Only a handful of insurers offer this type of cover and, in most cases, you'll see it referred to as dental illness cover.

Pet vaccine

Routine care

Routine care is usually an optional add-on with most pet insurance policies and covers your pet for some basic preventative treatments like teeth cleaning. It also covers things like desexing, general health checks and vaccinations, but it doesn't cover dental illnesses.

What does pet dental insurance cover?

Pet dental insurance policies can cover you for the following:

  • Gingivitis
  • Abscesses
  • Tooth removal
  • Dental diseases resulting from infection
  • Retained deciduous teeth
  • Cavities
  • Tooth fracture
These are some of the most common inclusions, but make sure you read the "What's Covered" section of the PDS to find out exactly what the policy you're looking at includes.

Also good to know: There's normally a waiting period before you can claim for dental benefits, and this can be as long as 2 years, so make sure you take out pet insurance sooner rather than later. You can compare pet insurance waiting periods here.

What does pet dental insurance not cover?

You'll generally find that the following treatments are never covered by any pet dental insurance policy:

  • Cosmetic dental procedures
  • Orthodontics
  • Root canals
  • Odontoclastic resorptive lesions (one of the most common dental issues in cats)
  • Other oral treatments not listed above

While you won't be covered for these procedures, routine care can cover preventative treatments like teeth cleaning so that there's less chance of your furry friend developing more serious mouth problems. If you want to get cover for routine care, it's sometimes included with comprehensive pet plans or can be added on to your policy.

How different pet insurers cover dental

Here's a list of how specific insurers cover dental. In a couple of cases, it's included automatically; in others, you'll have to pay extra to get covered.

  • Bow Wow. If you get their Ultimate Care Plan, you will be covered for dental illness treatments including gingivitis, abscesses and removal of teeth where medically necessary. You will need to serve a 6-month waiting period before you're covered, though.
  • Prime Sovereign. With their accident and illness policy, you can get automatically covered for dental illness treatments including gingivitis, abscesses and removal of teeth where medically necessary. Keep in mind: It comes with a 2-year waiting period.
  • Vets Choice. Vets Choice offers a dental benefit and dental plus benefit option which you can add on to your policy. It can cover you for dental injuries and illnesses as well as preventative care such as dental check-ups, teeth clean and polish, and preventative items like dental diets, bites, chews and more.
  • Knose. Knose gives you the option of adding on dental illness cover to your pet insurance policy. Cover includes things like dental diseases, gingivitis and periodontal disease. You won't be covered for any routine or elective dental procedures with this add-on, though.

Keep in mind: You can get basic services like teeth cleaning covered under routine care. Routine care is often another add-on you can get with pet insurance policies. It also covers things like desexing, general health checks and vaccinations.
