How do I choose the best energy provider in QLD?

There are a few things to keep in mind when finding the right energy plan for your household:

Find a cheaper price. Start your search by looking for a plan that is cheaper than your current one (it's good to have a recent bill close by). Use Finder's comparison tool to help you out.
Look for plans that are less than the reference price. The exact wording might vary between providers but look out for phrases like "10% less than the reference price". You shouldn't sign up for a plan equal to or higher than the reference price unless you have no other choice.
Beware hidden fees. They'll differ between providers but watch out for disconnection/reconnection costs, late fees and credit card fees that might add to your bills.

Do I qualify for any energy rebates or concessions in QLD?

There are several energy rebates currently available for Queensland residents with a key difference being the eligibility criteria.

Cost of living rebate
A one-off payment to help with rising cost of living.

- All Queensland households that pay a separate electricity bill (i.e. not households where electricity is included as part of rent). Tenants who receive a bill from their landlord (or body corporate) and customers using card-operated meters are also eligible.
- $175 for electricity bills only.
- There's no need to apply. The rebate will be automatically credited to your next electricity bill in 2022.

Electricity and gas rebates
Designed to help concession holders with the cost of their energy bills.

- Queensland concession card holders including seniors, pensioners and veterans. Services Australia Health Care card holders and those with asylum seek status are eligible for electricity rebates only.
- $372.20 (incl. GST) per year Electricity Rebate, $80.77 (incl. GST) per year Reticulated Natural Gas Rebate.
- Contact your electricity and/or gas retailer. You will need to provide personal details and have your concession card available to verify your eligibility. Rebates are automatically deducted from your bill. Residents of apartment complexes, residential parks, retirement villages and granny flats should enquire with the person/organisation that sends you your electricity bill.

Electricity and reticulated natural gas rebates for residential home parks and multi-unit residential premises
A similar concession to the general energy rebate but claimed for multi-residential premises by the owner.

If you live in a residential home park or multi-unit residential premises, the property owner is required to advise you of available rebates and claim them on your behalf. You, the resident, must have either a current:
- Pensioner Concession Card (issued by Services Australia or Department of Veteran's Affairs)
- Department of Veteran's Affairs Gold Card
- Queensland Seniors Card
- Services Australia Health Care Card OR
- Asylum seeker status
- $1.0197/day (incl. GST) Electricity Rebate, conditions apply
- $0.2213 (incl. GST) Reticulated Natural Gas Rebate, conditions apply
- The property owner needs to submit the Electricity Rebate Proprietor form (Form 502) when the account is paid.

Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme
This scheme helps Queenslanders who are struggling to pay their energy bills due to an unforeseen emergency or short-term financial crisis.

- To be eligible you must be the person responsible for paying the outstanding energy bill and hold either a current concession card, have an income equal to or less than the federal government's maximum income rate for part-age pensioners, or be part of your energy retailer's hardship program or payment plan.You must have also experienced either a significant decrease in your household income or high unexpected expenses on essential items. Further conditions could apply so it's always good to double-check.
- Up to $720 once every 2 years.
- Get in touch with your energy provider directly to start the process.

Medical Cooling and Heating Electricity Concession Scheme
This rebate helps cover electricity costs for people with chronic medical conditions that require constant heating and cooling.

- To be eligible, you must be a Queensland resident and have a qualifying medical condition where you need cooling or heating to prevent a worsening of symptoms. Your place of residence must have air-conditioning or a heating unit and you must hold a current Services Australia/Department of Veterans Affairs Pensioner Concession Card or a current Services Australia Health Care Card.
- $372.21 per year, paid as $93.06 each quarter.
- Complete the MCHECS application form and post it to the address listed on the form.

In Queensland, there are 2 types of electricity contracts available to customers:
- A market retail contract. Also known as a market offer, these contracts can include extra conditional discounts and benefits. Check the T&Cs to make sure it's right for you.
- A standard retail contract. Also known as a standing offer, this is the default plan a retailer offers. You'll be automatically switched to one when your market offer expires. The rate on a standard offer cannot be higher than the maximum default market offer price set by the Australian Energy Regulator.
If you live outside of South East Queensland you'll be on a standard offer with Ergon Energy where prices are regulated by the Queensland Competition Authority.
Customers in South East Queensland who are on a residential time of use Tariff 6900 will be charged different rates based on the following times:

On a time-of-use tariff you'll be charged more during peak hours (when demand is highest), less during off-peak (lowest demand) and an average "shoulder rate" at all other times.
Residential customers in South East Queensland may be on 1 of 4 main tariff types:
- Residential Flat rate (Tariff 8400). On this tariff you'll pay a daily supply charge and then a flat rate for your usage at all times of the day.
- Residential Time of Use (Tariff 6900). On this tariff you'll pay a daily supply charge and then a different rate for your usage depending on the time of day.
- Residential Demand (Basic Tariff 3700 and Transitional Tariff 3900). This is only available to customers with smart meters. On this tariff you pay a lower daily supply charge, lower flat rate for your usage at all times of the day and a "demand charge". The demand charge is a premium charge based on the highest amount of energy you've used at one time (typically applied during summer).
- Controlled Load (Super Economy Tariff 9000 and Economy Tariff 9100). The economy tariff is a flat rate for your hot water system's usage. The super economy tariff is for a hot water storage system where electricity is only supplied to heat your hot water for part of the day (between 10pm and 7am).
If you're having trouble seeing which tariff you're on, call your energy provider for more information – they should be able to easily sort you out.
