How do I compare and switch energy providers in SA?

When looking for a new energy provider, it's important to keep these things in mind:

Compare a wide range of plans. Have a recent bill handy and start your search by using our comparison tool to find a plan with cheaper rates than your current plan. Consider plans that are at least 10% less than the reference price. This is a benchmark set by the government to help you compare.
Watch out for hidden fees. Providers can charge for things like disconnection/reconnection fees, late payment fees, meter read fees and the like. These costs can vary between retailers so keep these in mind when comparing energy plans.

What's the difference between a carbon-neutral provider and GreenPower?

You can still make a difference even if you aren't able to find a carbon-neutral provider.

Some retailers offer carbon-neutral plans or GreenPower add-ons where they put energy back into the grid on your behalf. Choosing GreenPower comes at a cost, but you can decide how much of it you want to add on.

Do I qualify for any energy rebates or concessions in SA?

There are a range of energy rebates available to South Australian residents but strict eligibility criteria apply.

Energy bill concession
Designed to help South Australians on low or fixed incomes cover the cost of energy bills.

- You must have an eligible concession card or receive an eligible Centrelink payment.
- Additionally, you can't live with anyone who has a non-Centrelink income of $3,000 per year, unless they're your spouse, partner or dependant.
- In 2022/23 the concession is up to $241.63 a year to cover energy payments including LPG bottled gas and petrol used to generate energy.
- You can apply online with your Centrelink customer reference number or Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) file number, plus all the information from your most recent electricity bill.
- Good to know. If you're eligible for this concession you may also be eligible for the SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer (SACEDO) – available to Origin Energy customers from low-income households.

Cost of living concession
Helps those on a fixed or low income to cover all living expenses, including council rates, energy bills and more.

- You must have an eligible concession card or receive an eligible Centrelink payment. You can't live with anyone who earns more than the low-income threshold.
In the 2022/23 financial year the concession amounts are being doubled as a one-off. The amounts per household are:
- $449 (originally $224.50) for homeowner-occupiers
- $224.60 (originally $112.30) for tenants and homeowner-occupiers who are self-funded retirees with a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card
- Apply online if you have your Centrelink customer reference number, DVA file number or a copy of your most recent tax assessment. Applications must be submitted by 31 December to get the concession that financial year. Existing customers will receive the one-off double concession with no need to re-apply.

Medical heating and cooling concession
Assists South Australians on fixed or low incomes with a medical condition that requires frequent heating or cooling in their house.

- You must have an eligible concession card or receive an eligible Centrelink payment. You or a dependant must have a clinically verified medical condition requiring frequent heating or cooling.
- Good to know. You may be eligible for the medical heating and cooling concession as well as the "energy bill concession".
- $241.63 per year.
- Download the medical heating and cooling concession application form. You'll need to complete it with your medical practitioner and get them to sign the form. Send the completed form to MHC@sa.gov.au.

Home dialysis electricity concession
Designed to help South Australian residents with a kidney disease who receive treatment at home.

- To be eligible for this concession you must be a person undergoing kidney dialysis treatment at your residence that's been approved by an SA Health practitioner.
- $165 per year.
- Applications for this concession can only be made through the renal unit you get treatment from.

In South Australia, there are 2 types of electricity contracts to choose from:
- Market offers. Often when you're comparing plans, you'll be looking at a range of market offers. These typically include conditional discounts and other benefits to entice you to join. Use the reference price to compare plans and find the cheapest for your postcode.
- Standing offers. These are the default plans offered by a retailer. Typically after you've been on a market offer for 12 months, you'll be swapped onto a standing offer. The rate on a standing offer plan cannot be higher than the reference price set by the Australian Energy Regulator.
Customers in south-east South Australia who are on a time of use tariff can save on their electricity bill by using more energy in off-peak periods.
- Keep in mind: These timeframes are an example, the exact hours may vary between retailers.

- Good to know. In July 2020, South Australia introduced a new residential time-of-use tariff for residents with smart meters. Known as the "solar sponge" tariff, the aim is to encourage more energy usage during the day to use up surplus solar power in the grid. It's offered 10am–3pm and at a quarter of the price of the regular tariff. Contact your energy provider to find out more.
Residential customers in South Australia may be on one of several tariff types including:
- Residential Single Rate tariffs. On this tariff type you pay a single usage rate no matter the time of day in addition to your daily supply charge. A controlled load (i.e. a hot water system) can also be paid for on this type of tariff.
- Off-peak Controlled Load tariffs. You could opt for this tariff where electricity is only supplied to heat your water during off-peak hours.
- Residential Time of Use tariffs. On this tariff type (only available on certain meter types) you'll pay a daily supply charge and then a different rate for your usage depending on the time of the day (see the table above).
- Residential Prosumer tariffs. This tariff type is available to some residents who have batteries and allows them to discharge energy back into the SA power grid at peak periods.
- Keep in mind: Tariff types can vary from property to property. For more detail it's best to contact your provider.
