It's important to understand the different tariffs and electricity rates in Tasmania work as these will determine how much you end up paying for electricity.
There are 5 different tariffs available. Before we get into rates and description just keep in mind:
The most common combination of tariffs is Tariff 31 (lights and power) and Tariff 41 (heating and hot water).

Tariff 62 is a controlled load tariff applicable to certain residential properties. It'll kick in during off-peak, night period only. It may be used for water and space heating.
Here's a look at electricity rates offered by retailers on the different tariff types.

Frequently asked questions
Tasmania may get less sunshine than many other states in Australia but it's still possible to reap the benefits of installing solar and recoup the upfront costs in just a few years.
Expect to pay between $5,000 to $10,000 for a 6.6kWh system and receive at least 8.883c/kWh minimum feed-in tariff in Tasmania (as set by the Tasmanian Energy Regulator for 2022-2023).
You can rest assured that strict regulatory measures for solar in the state means you will receive high quality installations.
There are no solar rebates available in Tasmania but you could access the federal government's STC (Small-scale Technology Certificate) program.
It's for residential solar installations and is considered a discount voucher of sorts.
Depending on where you live or how big the solar system you want installed is, the STCs you're eligible for will vary and so will the subsequent rebate amount.
There's no need to apply for it. Your solar retailer will apply the discount after carrying out checks.
Taking Aurora Energy as an example, the annual bill for residential customers for general usage or controlled tariff is $2,052 for the typical non-concession customer.
The annual bill for a typical concession customer for Tariffs 31 and 41 is much lower and estimated to be $1,195.
These figures were taken from the Tasmanian Energy Regulator's September 2021 report. However, the current energy crisis might increase the yearly costs so you should use this information with some caution.
According to the Tasmanian Energy Regulator's September 2021 report, the yearly bill for Tas Gas and Aurora Energy customers is $1,398 and $1,407 respectively. This is based on an annual consumption level of 30,000 MJ.
TasNetworks distributes electricity to all of Tasmania. This is good to know in case there's a power outage and you need to report it or keep up to date.
Tas Gas is responsible for distributing gas throughout the state.
Currently, your choice of electricity providers are limited to 1st Energy, CovaU, Aurora Energy and Energy Locals.
That's because GEE Energy and Glow Power have switched off their market offers and aren't onboarding new customers.
Tasmanian customers may receive their electricity supply under either a standing offer contract or a market retail contract.
Unlike standing offers, market offer contracts allow you to negotiate rates with your energy provider and get a discount.
At the moment, Aurora Energy is the only energy provider required to offer regulated standing offer contracts.
Good to know. Standing offer prices are based on a 'building block' method meaning it takes into account the various costs incurred to supply electricity as determined by the Tasmanian Economic Regulator.
Peak and off peak times determine your usage charges on Tariff 93.
Peak time. Monday to Friday, 7am to 10am and 4pm to 9pm
Off peak. Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm and 9pm to 7am; all weekends are off peak (Saturday to Sunday)
