How can I earn Flybuys points on my credit card?

Currently, Coles Mastercard is the only credit card brand that offers Flybuys points per $1 on your eligible everyday purchases. Here's how many points you'll earn with one of its cards:

  • Coles Rewards Mastercard: 2 Flybuys points per $1 on eligible spending up to $3,000 per statement period (1 point per $1 after that).
  • Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard: 0.5 Flybuys points per $1 on eligible spending. Points are awarded in whole numbers and rounded down, meaning you earn 1 point per $2 spent with this card.
  • Coles Low Rate Mastercard: 0.5 Flybuys points per $1 spent at Coles Supermarkets (earned as 1 Flybuys point per $2).

With a Coles-branded credit card, your Flybuys membership details and barcode are also printed on the back of the card, so you can scan it to earn regular Flybuys points with program partners. This gives you a way to earn points twice when you shop with partners: once through Flybuys and once with your credit card.

Keep in mind: You'll need to provide your Flybuys membership number when you apply or after you activate your account to be able to earn Flybuys points with a credit card.

Transferring credit card points to Flybuys

If you have a Citi Rewards or Suncorp Rewards credit card, you can transfer points to your Flybuys account. The amount of points you get from a transfer is different with each program, so we've included the key details in a table.

Rewards programPoint transfer rate
Citi Rewards1.33 Citi Rewards points = 1 Flybuys point
Suncorp Rewards1.33 Suncorp Bank Rewards points = 1 Flybuys point

If you're comparing these cards to Coles Mastercard credit cards, both Citi Rewards and Suncorp Rewards offer an equivalent of 0.75 Flybuys points per $1 of eligible spending.

What is eligible spending?

Every credit card has its own definition of what transactions are and aren't eligible to earn points. But you'll typically earn points for everyday transactions including supermarket shopping, petrol, dining, subscriptions and travel bookings.

Transactions that don't usually earn points include balance transfers, account fees and charges and government spending. You can check the rewards program terms and conditions for your credit card, or ask the provider to find out if specific transactions will or won't earn points.

Example: How many Flybuys points can I earn with a credit card?

The amount of points you'll get from a Flybuys credit card depends on the card, its earn rate and how much you spend.

But to give you an idea, with an average credit card monthly spending of $2,100 you could earn between 1,050 and 4,200 Flybuys points per month. That works out to between 12,600 and 50,400 Flybuys points per year from credit card spending.

If you redeemed these points for Flybuys dollars, you could get $60 to $250 off your shop at Coles or another partner.

Tip: Look for Flybuys credit cards that have bonus points offers. These cards can give you thousands of Flybuys points when you sign up for a new account and meet the spend requirements. For example, you could get 50,000 bonus Flybuys points by spending $4,000 in the first 3 months.

How to redeem Flybuys points earned with a credit card

Once the Flybuys points earned with your credit card have been added to your account, you can redeem them for cash off your shop, retail items, travel, Velocity Points and other rewards offered through the Flybuys rewards program in a few steps:

  1. Go to https://experience.flybuys.com.au/ or the Flybuys app and log in to your account.
  2. Shop for rewards and choose the one you want.
  3. Follow the prompts to finalise your redemption.

You can also redeem points by calling the Flybuys service centre at 13 11 16.

What are the pros and cons of using a Flybuys credit card?

Pros

  • Earn points as you spend. A Flybuys-linked credit card will reward your everyday credit card spending. Plus, if you're shopping with a Flybuys partner, you can earn double the Flybuys points by tapping your Flybuys loyalty card at the checkout as well as spending with your credit card.
  • Instantly convert points to cash. With Flybuys-linked Coles credit cards, you can instantly convert 2,000 Flybuys points into $10 off your next shop at any Coles store.
  • Free membership. Certain frequent flyer programs require that you pay a registration or annual fee, but the Flybuys program doesn't charge such a fee. Please note that your credit card may come with an annual fee, though.
  • Get more than flights. You can redeem your Flybuys points for more than flight rewards. You can also get gift cards, convert your points to cash, or choose from an array of merchandise.
  • Convert points into frequent flyer points. If you'd prefer, you can also transfer your Flybuys points to an Etihad Guest Miles or Virgin Velocity frequent flyer account.
  • Enjoy bundled discounts. With attractive incentives to spend within the large network of Flybuys partners, you can save money or earn multiple Flybuys points by taking up exclusive partner promotions.

Cons

  • Few linked credit cards. Not many cards are directly linked to the Flybuys program, which limits your choices to a few card providers.
  • Higher annual fee for faster earn rate. The Coles Rewards Mastercard charges a $99 annual fee to earn up to 2 points for every $1 spent, compared to the Coles No Annual Fee Mastercard which lets you earn 0.5 points per $1 spent.
  • Limited travel benefits. You may be disappointed if you're looking for benefits like priority check-ins, travel insurance cover and lounge access. Unlike traditional frequent flyer programs, Flybuys doesn't directly offer these.
  • Restrictions. Flybuys customers are limited to earning points only with partner merchants, so you'll want to make sure that its network of partner stores caters for your existing spending habits.
  • Expiry. Flybuys points and dollars will expire if you fail to earn or redeem points for 12 consecutive months.

In general, the Flybuys program offers a competitive way to be rewarded for your daily expenses. Using a Flybuys credit card on top of that can double or triple your earn rate to maximise your rewards. But make sure you compare your options and ensure that the costs of the card don’t outweigh the Flybuys perks before you apply.

      Hi Jennifer,
Call Flybuys on 13 11 16 and they can help you get your account details and a new Flybuys card. If you have a Flybuys credit card, your membership number should be on the back, so you can scan that instead. You could also order a new card through the Flybuys app or online account if you have those details. Hope this helps!

      Hi Janice,

      Thanks for your question.

To convert your Flybuys points to Velocity Frequent Flyer points, you need to link your memberships through the flybuys and Velocity website.

Once successfully linked, you can already transfer your Flybuys points to Velocity Points by visiting the Flybuys website rewards section.

      Cheers,

How do I t/f points into money off my next Coles bill. Can you do this for me?

      SallyJune 24, 2015Finder

      Hi Tess,

      Thanks for your question.

Just to confirm, you have come through to finder.com.au, not Coles or flybuys. As such, we’re unable to access or manage your flybuys account.

You can get money off your next Coles shop by following these instructions:
      1. Make sure you are signed into your account before turning your points into flybuys Dollars.
      2. Once you’re logged in to your online account, click ‘Redeem Now’ and complete the requested info – including your 4-digit PIN.
      3. Select how many points you want to convert into flybuys Dollars.
      4. Present your flybuys card when you’re next at Coles, let the team member at the checkout know you’d like to pay with flybuys Dollars. Enter the amount of flybuys Dollars you’d like to spend, swipe your card and enter your PIN.

I’ve sent you an email with the link to the flybuys sign in page.

I hope this has helped answer your question.

      Thanks,

      Sally
